Drinking Coffee Protects Your DNA From Damage

There is an old saying that goes like this: “The road to friendship is paved with coffee.” The drink has been popular since the beginning of time among millions of people all over the world. It has been known for its delicious taste and tempting aroma which pampers our senses.

But did you know that there is more to this drink than just an enjoyable ordinary habit?

Studies have shown that drinking coffee on a regular basis has various health benefits, such as promotion of a healthy heart, protection against diabetes type 2 and Parkinson’s disease, reduced risk of skin cancer and so on. But now, recent studies have shown that drinking coffee can also help in keeping the integrity of our DNA.

Spontaneous breaks of DNA strands, also known as oxidative damage, have been well established as a huge health risk marker.

This is mainly caused by the ROS which are highly reactive molecules containing oxygen, produced during normal metabolism, but when in excess, they damage the proteins in our DNA cells thus causing DNA brakeage. This is named ‘a malfunctioning antioxidant system’.

Scientists have worked on a number of health research studies in order to prove the various health benefits of drinking coffee. There was such useful study done in Germany.

The study was small and it included only men, but the results were that daily coffee consumption can decrease oxidative damage in the blood cells, which plays a major role in our immune system i.e. in fighting against diseases and infections. The study can be found in the European Journal of Nutrition.

It was conducted among 84 healthy men, 50% of which were given 750 ml of special roasted blended Arabica coffee brew daily for 4 weeks, and the other 50% were given the same amount of water for the same period of time.

All the participants were told not to change their daily habits and to avoid caffeine -containing products. At the beginning of the study, both groups showed similar levels of spontaneous DNA brakeage. And in the end, results showed a 27% difference in DNA brakeage, the control group being the one with more spontaneous DNA brakes.

These fewer breaks of the DNA are due to the bioactive compounds which can be found mostly in the green beans, but some are also generated during the processing of coffee, more precisely during the roasting phase.

These components, especially the chlorogenic acids, are known for their excellent antioxidant and anti – inflammatory properties.

With that being said, it is now safe to state that coffee is not just a tasty drink, but a healthy one too. It does not mean that drinking coffee can be a substitute for a healthy diet, but it surely will help in improving your overall health.
